October 8 - 24 | The Den Theatre | Crosby Stage

A Play by Amy Herzog

Co-Directed by Josh Leeper & Amanda Hays

Over the course of a single month, a grieving young man and his feisty 91-year-old grandmother by turns infuriate, bewilder and ultimately reach each other as they cohabitate in her West Village apartment.

Directors’ Notes

When I first read 4000 Miles, I immediately connected with Leo's journey. Like him, I spent much of my early twenties trying to understand who I was, where I belonged, how to navigate the distance between where I came from and where I hoped to go, and often feeling like I was making all the wrong choices. His relationship with Vera also reminded me of the guidance, honesty, and support I've received from my mother and the mentors who helped shape my life as I grew. What I love most about this play is its belief that meaningful connection can be found across generations. Amy Herzog's writing is funny, compassionate, and deeply human, reminding us that the people who change our lives often arrive when we need them most. I hope this production encourages you to reflect on the relationships that have shaped your own journey, because at the end of the day, that's all we have.

— Josh Leeper

As we've embarked on this journey to bring you 4000 Miles, I am continually moved and inspired by the intergenerational bond between a grandmother and her grandson in this story. In my experience, this is an underrepresented dynamic in modern theater and it deserves more space on our stages. So much of Vera reminds me of my own two grandmothers–her humor, bluntness, and passion for storytelling–and watching these characters come to life has been a true joy to watch. In a world that often pulls us apart, I hope that this play will remind audiences to seek out connections across generational divides and that humor, grief, and love unite us across a lifetime.
